“Absorbing carbon, Emitting Hope”.
In 2018, Caritas Denmark established a connection between Tropical Forest Connect (TROFACO) and CIDI Uganda to initiate the Tree planting project. This ambitious endeavor aimed to plant 100 million trees throughout various districts in Uganda to preserve the environment and foster carbon sequestration, sustainable land practices, and community growth.
The TROFACO project has achieved considerable success in carbon offsetting and sustainable land use. Over 50 million trees of diverse varieties (including Jackfruit, Mangoes, Mahogany, Tamineria, Tick tree, Grieveria, and more) have been planted to assist in offsetting carbon emissions and promoting sustainable land utilization. Agroforestry systems have been developed to encourage sustainable agricultural practices and enhance livelihoods.
Our Successes, Real Stories Real Results;
In the villages of Kacheera, Rakai District, and Kiya in Kyotera District, a pioneering program was launched to compensate community members for taking good care of trees under the TROFACO project. The initiative for tree planting aimed to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable land use practices. Under the program, community members were given various tree species to plant and care for them. The payment termed Carbon Compensation was a token of appreciation for their role in mitigating climate change.
Mr Semakula and Family’s tree site
Mr Semakula and his family planted and are caring for 30,000 trees in Kiya-Kyotera District. They envision establishing a recreation center with their trees, where people could come
together to learn, play, and enjoy nature. The plans include: Building a zip line and rope course, creating a playground for younger kids, establishing picnic areas and hiking trails, Developing educational programs about conservation and sustainability. They are going to use some of the carbon compensation money to build a borehole for the community and are encouraging people to plant trees.
Jolly’s life continues to improve because of tree planting
Mrs Barigye Jolly has a woodlot of 5,000 trees with different varieties. Her dedication to reforestation efforts is inspiring and we are looking forward to add her more tree seedlings seeing the positive impact of her work on the environment.
I am truly grateful for your recognition and support. I plan to use this money to pay my childrens’ school fees and also invest in my farm by planting more trees and crops. This will not only benefit my family but also contribute to a greener and a more sustainable community.
Thank you again for your generosity and commitment to environmental conservation. I look forward to continuing with my tree-planting journey! (says Barigye Jolly)

Overflowing with gratitude
Ms. Naluyima Aisha planted 3,000 trees on her land in a strategic location to connect the existing forest fragments.
“I’m grateful for the Carbon Compensation Scheme,” said Naluyima Aisha, a community member from Kacheera. “The payment is going to help me take care of my family and buy animals for raring. Those will provide me with manure to also apply in my garden as I look after my trees. I plan to buy my self more tree seedlings for planting.
